  • Watch the sun set on the highest pyramid of Yaxhá

Guatemala is a culturally rich destination with its roots dating back to the ancient Mayan people, an advanced culture whose astrological findings and worldly predictions are still relevant today. Guatemala abounds with many of the ancient Mayan secrets that are still waiting to be discovered and yet to be revealed.

There has been a lot of hype about the 2012 Mayan prophecy that marks the end of the 13th Baktun (cycle) and suggests a big change that will impact humanity and the beginning of a new era. This itinerary explores some of the most important Mayan heritage sites strewn throughout Guatemala and introduces travellers to some of the most fascinating sights in the country.

Visit the famous Candelaria Caves, known by the Q’eqchi’ Maya people as “Mucbilha’l”, extraordinary caves with cathedral-like caverns. Experience the grandeur of the grotto on a thrilling tubing adventure through an underground section of the Candelaria River, which was one of the entrances to Xibalba, the Mayan underground.

For the history buff, there are more than 20 archaeological sites surrounding the Candelaria Cave System and numerous examples of Maya pottery.

One of the most exciting experiences during this itinerary is the chance for travellers to engage in a real Mayan Ceremony. Conducted by a local Mayan community that inhabits the Candelaria area, it allows travellers to participate in a sacred ritual that connects them with Mother Nature.

Travellers will also visit the archaeological site of Cancuen- an important commercial hub during the late Maya Classic Period. Another important site that has a special connection with the end of Baktun 9 and 10 is Ceibal, known as “The Maya Art Gallery”, due to the discovery of the best-preserved stelae of the Late Classic Period.

Witness the stunning sunset at Yaxhá, an archaeological site with architecture related with the long count calendar and the solar calendar before finishing your adventure through the Mayan prophecy in Tikal, one of the largest archeological sites of the Maya.
