Absorb the scenic views and cultural heritage of the Copper Canyon, one of the most astonishing natural formations on earth. Start out at just about sea level in Los Mochis and then move onto the charming, colonial town of El Fuerte. Wander through the picturesque old haciendas that have been converted into hotels and explore the main plaza complete with fountains and a gazebo just outside your door. Enjoy the scenic El Fuerte river views from the malecon, or boardwalk.
A trip through the Copper Canyon would never be complete without the fantastic ride on the famous Chepe Train that winds through several canyons. The Chepe train line took almost 100 years to complete and is considered an engineering marvel. Soak up the incredible views from both sides of the train while a bar and dining car make your journey even more comfortable.
Wonderful views of Urique Canyon, the Copper Canyon and Tararecua Canyon will entice you as you visit Cerocahui and Divisadero. The quiet, alpine town of Creel awaits you, nestled into the High Sierra Mountains at over 7,000 feet just past Divisadero.
Raramuri Indians abound in the upper sierra and they'll smile shyly at you while trying to sell their hand-made baskets and crafts. Their charm and innocence will delight you as you personally witness one of the best preserved ethnic groups on the continent. Their traditional outfits are all made by hand by the women and one can purchase bolts of this brightly colored cloth in Creel and donate it to any Indian family they like.
A full day tour through the Copper Canyon will show you an interesting museum in the middle of a Raramuri Indian Ejido, some lovely missions from the 18th century, a lake, a waterfall and some incredible views as you are driven to the bottom of the Copper Canyon.
Moving onto Chihuahua City, you'll have a chance to interact with a group of Mennonites from one of the Camps in Cuauhtemoc and an informative tour of Chihuahua City will enlighten you as you learn more about the dramatic history of this state and its Revolutionary Heros. Pancho Villa's House, Quinta Gameros and the Cathedral are all visited among other stops as you wind up this cultural and educational trip through Sinaloa and Chihuahua States.
Horseback riding, hiking and the Cable Car in Divisadero are all optional activities that you can enjoy at different times on this trip through the canyons.
